About the Radiologic Technology program

The OSU-OKC Radiologic Technology Associate of Applied Science degree is a 68-credit hour program, which includes classroom and laboratory instruction on campus as well as supervised clinical experiences at affiliated health agencies.

Benefits of an OSU-OKC Radiologic Technology Degree:

  • As part of the requirements for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification process, candidates must complete an ARRT verified educational program and earn an academic degree (associate degree or higher). OSU-OKC’s Radiologic Technology program is an ARRT verified educational program and offers an Associate of Applied Science academic degree, which meets these requirements.
  • OSU-OKC’s Radiologic Technology program is accredited through OSU-OKC’s Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Institutional Accreditation, which is an ARRT recognized accreditation agency. Upon program completion, graduates are eligible for national board exams through the ARRT.
  • Students will participate in instructor-led lab sessions using state-of-the-art Direct Digital radiography and PACS systems.
  • Students are exposed to a wide variety of procedures in the clinical setting to allow them to achieve program competency requirements, with a 1:1 student to radiography clinical staff ratio at each clinical site.

Admission to the Radiologic Technology program is based upon a points system. One class is admitted to the program every academic year. Up to 20 students are admitted each year with the applicant pool varying from 60 to 100 applications. The accepted number is commensurate to the number of clinical rotations that we have available to offer the students. The following factors are considered in selecting students:

  • Grades from required prerequisite coursework
  • 2.5 Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of all previous collegiate academic work
  • Pre-Admission TEAS test score
  • Required prerequisite courses completed
  • Pre-clinical vaccination/shot records (Due upon admission to the program)

JOB FACT FILE

Radiologic Technologists and Technicians are among Oklahoma’s Top 100 Critical Occupations with an average of 244 annual openings and median annual earnings of $60,049.60 with an associate degree.  Top 100 Critical Occupations - Oklahoma Works - Oklahoma Works

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, national employment of radiologic technologists is projected to grow 6 percent from 2021 to 2031, about as fast as the average for all occupations. About 16,600 openings for radiologic and MRI technologists are projected each year, on average, over the decade.

Computer Literacy Requirement

Students enrolled in the program will be expected to use the computer for generating reports, testing, computer-assisted instruction and electronic searches. The cardiovascular technology curriculum at OSU-Oklahoma City is computer intensive. Graduation from the program allows the student to meet the computer literacy requirement. An introductory computer course is recommended for students lacking computer experience and/or skills.

Academic Advantage

The department's radiologic technology laboratory includes state-of-the-art digital radiography (DR) equipment, and a cloud-based PACS system. The program equipment also includes a full body DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) machine, a DR equipped portable X-Ray machine, a deactivated fluoroscopy C-Arm for simulations, and two full body X-Ray phantoms with real human skeleton bones for students to learn and practice taking real images similar to actual patients. The program is designed to take five (5) semesters to complete starting from the time you are admitted into the program and take your first radiologic technology course. You cannot double up on the radiologic technology courses because each course builds upon the previous course. Even if you have all of your support and related courses completed or have a degree in another field, it will still take 5 semesters to complete the radiologic technology program.

  • Board Certification

To meet the educational requirements of the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) primary pathway for the national board certification examination, applicants must successfully complete an ARRT-approved educational program in the same discipline as the credential they are pursuing AND earn an associate's degree or higher.

OSU-OKC’s Radiologic Technology program is an ARRT approved educational program and offers an Associate of Applied Science academic degree. Upon successful completion of the OSU-OKC Radiologic Technology program, graduates are immediately eligible to sit for their national board examination through the ARRT.

After graduation, applicants may make three attempts within three years to pass the ARRT certification and registration examination. The three-year period begins with the starting date of the applicant’s first attempt at taking the ARRT exam. After three unsuccessful exam attempts or three years—whichever comes first—the applicant’s eligibility ends.

If an applicant fails an ARRT exam three times within three years, to regain eligibility to reapply for a primary pathway certification and registration, applicants must re-enroll in the same or a similar educational program or pursue a post-primary pathway.
